FAPESP Research for Innovation – BrPhotonics, a Brazilian firm that specializes in the research and development of high-speed optical communications systems, was considered one of the six best startups in which to invest during the 2nd European Photonics Venture Forum, held in the Dutch city of Eindhoven in 2016.

In a contest with 42 firms, BrPhotonics chalked up 75% of the highest possible score for items ranging from market potential and team experience to product, state-of-the-art or advanced technology compared with rivals, competitiveness, business plan and presentation. “What most drew the attention of the judges was the fact that we’re realizing the convergence between photonics and microelectronics and achieving tangible results on both fronts,” says Júlio César Rodrigues Fernandes de Oliveira, the president of BrPhotonics.

The firm was founded in 2014 as a joint venture between Fundação Centro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento em Telecomunicações (CPqD), owning 51%, and US-based GigOptix, since renamed GigPeak, one of the world’s leading suppliers of advanced high-speed semiconductor components, owning 49%. FINEP, the Brazilian Innovation Agency, has recently become a third shareholder by investing in support for the firm’s business plan, Oliveira explains.

With 19 employees in Campinas (São Paulo State, Brazil) and two in Seattle (United States), BrPhotonics supplies telecommunications operators with the devices that integrate optical transmitters and receivers for networks with capacities ranging from 100 Gbps to 1 terabyte per second (Tbps).

“We’ve achieved complete mastery of laser, modulator and receiver technology as well as silicon, polymer, and microelectronic design capabilities,” Oliveira says.

In second half of 2015, the firm was awarded funding from FAPESP’s Innovative Research in Small Business Program (PIPE) to develop a silicon external-cavity laser for applications in DWDM (dense wavelength-division multiplexing) systems. “PIPE enables us to pursue the levels of innovation required to meet future demand, which we wouldn’t be able to do at present with our own resources,” Oliveira says.

BrPhotonics has customers in Ireland, South Korea and the United States, where it supplies devices to Tyndall, OE Solutions and the US Army and delivers solutions to Menara, Jabil and Multilane.
