Agência FAPESP – A survey by Inova UNICAMP, the University of Campinas’s incubator in São Paulo State, Brazil, shows an increase of 14% year over year in the number of startups incubated there and 31% growth in job creation as a result of this activity. This positive performance contrasts with the high unemployment due to Brazil’s recent economic recession.

The number of startups registered by UNICAMP has reached 584, of which 485 are active in the marketplace. Their aggregate revenue surpasses R$3 billion per year, or one-and-a-half times UNICAMP’s annual budget, and they employ 28,889 people. The numbers were announced during the 12th edition of UNICAMP Ventures held during InovaCampinas 2017, an event for the startup ecosystem in the region.

“The growth in job creation is one of the most evident signs of this innovation ecosystem’s consistency,” said Newton Frateschi, executive director of Inova UNICAMP, in an interview with the institution’s press office. “This is despite the economic crisis in Brazil, and without counting the performance of firms that were acquired in the period. It shows very clearly how the university gives back to society.”

Roughly one-third (32%) of the active startups focus on information technology, while 28% are in consulting and 19% in engineering. The rest are in education, health and welfare, food and beverages, marketing, green technology, energy, telecommunications, biotechnology, agriculture and animal health, and chemicals, among others.

Approximately 72% are small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and 91% are based in São Paulo State – 54% in Campinas proper and 6% in the metropolitan area.
