Agência FAPESP* – The São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Cryogenic Electron Microscopy (SPSAS CryoEM) will be held on July 10-27, 2023, at the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo (IQUSP) in Brazil. The event aims to cover the theoretical and practical foundations of advanced CryoEM techniques used to determine macromolecular structures.
Time will be divided between lectures, demonstrations and hands-on practical sessions given by internationally renowned researchers in the field of CryoEM. Topics that will be covered include sample preparation, data collection, processing of high-resolution image data, single particle analysis, in-cell structural biology by cryo electron tomography (Cryo-TM), model building and model validation.
The School will benefit from a roster of speakers comprising highly regarded researchers in the field, such as Jose Maria Carazo from the National Center for Biotechnology in Madrid, Spain; Yifan Cheng from the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of California, United States; Julia Mahamid from the Structural and Computational Biology Unit of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany; Giulia Zanetti from the Department of Biological Sciences of Birkbeck College in London, United Kingdom; Mysha Kudryashev from Max-Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicin in Berlin, Germany; Wah Chiu from Department of Bioengineering, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Stanford National Accelerator Laboratory at University of Stanford, United States; Marin van Heel, from Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory (LNNano) at the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas, Brazil, among others.
The event has support from FAPESP through its São Paulo School of Advanced Science Program (SPSAS). The course is aimed at graduate students and post-docs. Undergraduate students and young PIs may also apply. Candidates are expected to be fluent in English. Students participating in the course will be given the opportunity to present their research projects in poster presentations.
Interested parties must submit their applications by filling the online form available at sites.usp.br/cryoemschool2023/applications/ by March 06, 2023. Attendance will be limited to 70 students chosen by the Organizing Committee from applicants based in Brazil and from other countries. Those selected will receive transportation and daily allowances (except for students currently receiving a FAPESP scholarship).
The list of approved candidates will be made available in mid-March, 2023 via e-mail and on the School’s webpage. Enquiries can be made via e-mail spcryoem2023@iq.usp.br.
