FAPESP Research for Innovation – What is there in common between the men’s soccer team that won Brazil’s first gold medal for the sport at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, Portugal’s male and Brazil’s female Olympic soccer teams, and about 80% of the top clubs in the Brazilian soccer championships, such as Palmeiras, São Paulo, Cruzeiro, Internacional, Coritiba, Corinthians, Flamengo, Bahia, Vitória and Atlético-PR, among many others? Answer: they all use TacticalPad software in training sessions and pre-match and half-time talks.

Developed by ClanSoft, TacticalPad enables team managers, technical staff and fitness coaches to exchange their old wooden clipboards for a more efficient system with which to prepare the team’s tactics, study strategic decisions, run the numbers and analyze plays, including the other side’s.

The software was born of a lifelong passion for soccer cherished by the firm’s partners, computer engineers Pedro Almeida, Danilo Lacerda and Fernando Closs.

The initiative to set up the firm in 2009 came with the possibility of obtaining support from FAPESP through its Innovative Research in Small Business Program (PIPE). “We didn’t have enough capital of our own to risk leaving our jobs and setting up the firm with a view only to future profitability,” says Closs.

TacticalPad can be used on devices running Windows, Android or iOS, including tablets and smartphones. It can be projected onto TV screens and computer monitors. Its functionality ranges from 3D animation and document export to supporting drills, project sharing, team management and basic game statistical calculations and providing high-quality graphics, among other resources.

The main users of TacticalPad are soccer managers around the world. Intriguingly, direct sales to managers far exceed sales to clubs because there is a view that the tool should come with the coach, rather than with the team.

TacticalPad’s main niche market is of course soccer, but the firm also offers versions for futsal, basketball, handball, ice hockey, and American football.

Besides PIPE, the startup also received funding from FINEP, the Brazilian Innovation Agency, via its Innovative Startup program (Prime) to pay for marketing and financial consultants.
