Agência FAPESP – The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), one of the Research Councils UK (RCUK), released a new call for proposals for international research funding for NERC researchers in partnership with scientists from other countries.
The call welcomes proposals in accordance to the terms of the RCUK-FAPESP Lead Agency Agreement, which aims to support development of cooperative research projects among associated British and Brazilian researchers.
The objective of the NERC Call, which falls under the International Opportunities Fund, is to facilitate international cooperation in line with the strategic priorities of the council and that can add value to existing environmental research.
The call is aimed toward themes including Biodiversity, Earth System Science, Environment, Pollution and Human Health, Natural Threats, Climate Systems, Technology and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources.
The deadline to register declarations of intent is August 17, 2011. Full proposals will be accepted until September 21st.
Declarations of intent and the proposals themselves should be directly submitted to NERC by researchers in the UK together with research colleagues connected to higher education and research institutions in São Paulo State.
The research project may last up to three years and should be related to a current FAPESP Thematic Project under the coordination of the applicant. The applicant can request the equivalent of up to £ 150,000 from FAPESP.
The funded collaborative projects shall fall under the Regular Research Awards, including equipment, academic scholarships and other financial needs as well as stimulating collaboration between researchers and post-graduate students on up to three months of travel each.
Further information about the Call is available at: www.nerc.ac.uk/research/international/iof/events/ao2.asp. Queries may be sent to: chamada-fapesp-nerc@fapesp.br.

First call
In the call released under the NERC International Opportunities Fund in 2010, six research projects were selected to receive funding totaling £ 1.4 million. One is connected to the FAPESP-NERC Call published in November.
The project is led by Professor Paulo Artaxo of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP)’s Institute of Physics, and by Professor Gordon McFiggans of the University of Manchester in Great Britain. The goal is to establish a network of researchers to study the composition of the atmosphere in the Amazon and its potential influence over regional and global climates.
