FAPESP is launching a new fellowship program, the Foreign Research Fellowship (BEPE). The aim is to support short and medium term research abroad for current FAPESP fellows in the following programs: Scientific Initiation, Master’s, Doctorate and Post-Doctorate.
The foreign research fellowship must be part of an ongoing regular research award project in the country; independent applications are not accepted. The duration of the program is variable, in accordance with the terms of the Regular Research award utilized by the candidate, but should be a minimum of one month.
FAPESP has made supporting foreign research abroad for its fellows an institutional priority. All BEPE proposals should demonstrate how the foreign research internship will offer a substantial contribution to the research the fellow is developing in Brazil under his or her Regular Research Award. The foreign institution and principal investigator will have to submit a formal written statement confirming acceptance of the research project and the intern for the proposed duration, without additional costs to FAPESP other than the fellowship award and benefits.
The BEPE period will not be discounted from the duration of Regular Research Awards. Recipients will have Regular Research Awards suspended for the duration of their internship abroad and reactivated for the full remainder of the grant cycle.
The value of BEPE stipends are as follows: US$ 1,100 for Scientific Initiation; US$ 1,300 for Master’s, US$ 1,600 in Doctorate or Direct Doctorate; and US$ 2,800 (plus R$ 5,333.40) in Post-Doctorate studies. These values exclude additional assistance in the form of Technical Reserves, relocation/installation assistance (for awards lasting longer than three months) and health insurance.
FAPESP recognizes the value of research-focused foreign exchange programs for researchers in training, which the Foundation has been supporting by allowing Regular Research Award recipients to suspend their fellowship in order to take advantage of scholarships abroad or to use the technical reserves of FAPESP grants to stay up 6 months abroad.
In the course of FAPESP’s contact with the scientific community to identify current demands and evaluate the effects of its support policies, the need for new types of support for research exchange programs became clear, including foreign research internships for researchers-in- training and for post-doctoral fellows.
In future grants cycles, FAPESP will encourage new applicants to submit proposals containing foreign research internships. Additionally, the inclusion of foreign internships in new applications for Regular Research Awards will be considered a positive factor in the analysis process.
