By Maria Fernanda Ziegler | Agência FAPESP – The Center for Agriculture & Biosciences International (CABI) has just published an English-language edition of Tourism Theory – Concepts, Models and Systems, whose original Portuguese version is considered essential reading for tourism students.
Published in Portuguese in 2008 and in Spanish in 2010, the book has been rewritten and updated for this new English-language edition. FAPESP supported this project with a research grant for books published abroad.
According to the author, Alexandre Panosso Netto, who teaches an undergraduate course in leisure and tourism and a Master’s course in tourism in the School of Arts, Sciences & Humanities at the University of São Paulo (EACH-USP) in Brazil, the book fills a gap in the literature on tourism. “It’s written as a textbook, setting out the basic concepts that tourism students need to know, and it’s packed with examples,” Panosso told Agência FAPESP.
The English-language edition has been expanded to include contributions from 15 additional subject specialists, who are all Brazilian, adding to the content of the book’s 59 chapters. At the end of each chapter, an “Operationalizing” section outlines how the theory discussed is applied in practice. The book also contains sections with exercises and further reading for students who want to explore the topics discussed in greater depth.
A third edition in Portuguese, which will be based on the English-language version, is also being prepared.
“We were successful with the Portuguese-language edition because we used many examples from other countries that connected with the experience of Brazilians. Now we’ve extended the scope of the book to parts of Asia and Eastern Europe, which have strong tourism sectors, and we’ve also used examples from Latin America,” said Panosso, who has written the book in partnership with Guilherme Lohmann, a former professor at EACH-USP who is currently working at Griffith University in Australia.
