Agência FAPESP* – With the intention of helping undergraduate students and market professionals in the field of data science, professor André Carlos Ponce de Leon Ferreira de Carvalho, director of the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (ICMC) at the University of São Paulo (USP) in São Carlos, has launched the book Data Science – Fundamentals and Applications (Editora LTC, 2024).
The book covers the complete sequence of a data science project, from the basic and necessary notions of statistics to information collection and processing, attribute engineering, modeling, and examples of recent applications. The book covers the fundamental concepts but in a practical way.
“What sets the book apart is that it gives an overview of the main topics of data science with a practical approach, without requiring any prior knowledge, with a short introduction to Python and codes to apply the concepts covered. Its importance lies in the fact that until now there hasn’t been a book in Portuguese that did this,” says Carvalho, who is also a researcher at the Center for Mathematical Sciences Applied to Industry (CeMEAI), a Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Center (RIDC) supported by FAPESP and based at ICMC-USP.
He also recommends the book for other fields within mathematics and engineering. The book includes code examples written in the Python language, which are also available online to reinforce the knowledge acquired.
Due to its introductory nature, it is suitable for undergraduates, postgraduates, and professionals in related fields seeking specialization, and can also be used in collaborative data science projects.
“It’s a book for first-year undergraduate students in data science or artificial intelligence, students in programs that have an introductory data science course, professionals who want to know what data science does, and those interested in learning its basic concepts,” the researcher adds.
Data Science – Fundamentals and Applications has 376 pages and can be purchased in both print and digital formats from the Grupo Gen website. The printed version costs BRL 159 and the e-book costs BRL 111.
