Agência FAPESP – The book Um naturalista no Antropoceno (A naturalist in the Anthropocene) (Editora Unesp, 2023), written by biologist Mauro Galetti, was one of the winners of the 1st edition of the Jabuti Academic Award. The book, which brings together the author’s experiences of traveling to inhospitable places such as the Galapagos Islands, the Bahamas and Borneo, and describes his scientific journey, came first in the “Biological Sciences, Biodiversity and Biotechnology” category.
Galetti is a professor at the Institute of Biosciences of São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Rio Claro, and one of the directors of the Center for Research on Biodiversity Dynamics and Climate Change (CBioClima) – a FAPESP Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center (RIDC).
In an interview with Agência FAPESP in June, he said that his narrative was inspired by texts by American authors such as Edward O. Wilson (1929-2021) and Jared Diamond. “I grew up in biology reading the work of these authors and I felt there was a lack of more books like this in Brazil. Mine is just one story. With this book, I hope to create not only readers but also other authors,” he said at the time (read more at agencia.fapesp.br/52628 and agencia.fapesp.br/51332).
According to the author, some of the chapters are linked to projects funded by FAPESP (05/52726-9, 07/03392-6, 08/10154-7, 14/50434-0 and 14/01986-0) and other support he has received throughout his career.
Dedicated to scientific, technical and professional fields, the Jabuti Academic Award is promoted by the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL). The ceremony took place on August 6th at the Sérgio Cardoso Theater in São Paulo and honored the winners of the 29 categories, divided into Science and Culture and Special Awards.
