Agência FAPESP* – The Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center for Neuromathematics (NeuroMat) has launched the new season of the podcast The Mathematics of the Brain.

NeuroMat is a FAPESP Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center (RIDC) based at the University of São Paulo (USP).

The podcast covers three main topics: the model of neuronal firing systems developed by the RIDC NeuroMat team, the statistical framework needed to rigorously address the “statistical brain” conjecture, and the processes of building and producing cutting-edge science in Brazil. The primary goal is to broaden and deepen public knowledge about RIDC NeuroMat.

In the first episode of the new season, the podcast tackles the question “What is the brain?” The episode explores this question from different perspectives and highlights the importance of interdisciplinarity by integrating neurobiology, mathematics, and computer science.

Professors André Frazão Helene, from USP’s Institute of Biosciences, Jorge Stolfi, from the Institute of Computing of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Maria Elisa Pimentel-Piemonte, from USP’s Medical School, and Cláudia Domingues Vargas, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), were interviewed. All four are researchers at NeuroMat.

The interviewees discuss how understanding the brain involves both biological and computational aspects, emphasizing how these complex systems adapt and learn based on past experiences.

The episode is available on the NeuroMat website, on the NeuroMat YouTube channel and on the various streaming platforms (Spotify, iTunes, etc.).
