By Maria Fernanda Ziegler  |  Agência FAPESP – Applications are open until April 24, 2019, for the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Learning from Data, to be held in Brazil from July 29 through August 9 at the University of São Paulo’s International Diffusion Center (CDI) by the university’s Mathematics and Statistics Institute (IME-USP).

FAPESP is supporting the event through its São Paulo School of Advanced Science Program (SPSAS). The School is targeting graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and researchers who are already working on subjects relating to data science. One hundred places are available, half for attendees from Brazil and half for those from other countries. Participants who live outside São Paulo City will receive financial support to cover the cost of air travel, accommodation and meals.

The course will focus on fundamentals in four areas of computer science: databases, machine learning, high-performance computing and image processing, all of which have mathematics as their basis.

“We believe the next generation of computer systems will require researchers and software developers to be capable of integrating these four areas of computation with mathematics as a foundation,” said João Eduardo Ferreira, a professor at IME-USP and organizing committee chair.

The ten-day event will include ten short courses and five lectures designed to present an integrated in-depth view of data science fundamentals, technologies and applications.

It also aims to connect data science to other knowledge areas and will therefore include discussion of applications of data science techniques to real problems in astronomy, economics, genetics and image processing, as well as data management in the context of open science. There will also be a session in which experts assess the impact of data science on society and a series of poster presentations by participants on their work in progress.
