Agência FAPESP – The University of São Paulo’s Biomedical Science Institute (ICB-USP) in Brazil will host the São Paulo School of Advanced Science in Glycobiology on July 20-29, 2020. Applications for the event must be submitted online until April 28. Applicants can be undergraduates, graduates, or postdoctoral researchers who earned their PhDs not more than five years ago, and may be residents of any country.

The event, abbreviated SPSAS-GLYC, will feature lectures by 12 researchers considered world experts in glycobiology, a field of biology dedicated to studying the structure and biosynthesis of the saccharides (sugar chains, such as glucose, lactose or cellulose) that are found in all living organisms and perform many functions within cells.

The program will cover the following topics: biosynthesis and functions of glycoconjugates, functions of glycans in cancer, new methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis of glycoconjugates, the importance of glycan-binding proteins in pathological processes, glycan-mediated immune system modulation, glycobiology applied to the study of infectious diseases, heparin and intracellular signaling, and chemical and enzymatic synthesis of glycoconjugates for disease treatment.

The organizing committee for SPSAS-GLYC, chaired by researcher Giuseppe Palmisano, will select 72 candidates to participate in the event, half of them Brazilians and the other half from the rest of the world. Selection will be based on analysis of each applicant’s letter of intent, research project abstract and résumé. Priority will be given to candidates who are enrolled in master’s or PhD programs and are conducting projects in the field of glycobiology. The applicant’s country of origin will also be taken into consideration in an effort to include participants from all continents.

The cost of air travel, accommodation, lunch and local transportation during the course will be funded for the selected candidates. Passport, visa and health insurance expenses will not be covered.

SPSAS-GLYC is supported by FAPESP under the aegis of its São Paulo School of Advanced Science (SPSAS) program, whose remit is to contribute to the training of students and to ensure that São Paulo State is a globally competitive hub for talented scientists.
